History of
Sashabaw Plains Chapter
On October 9,
1984, a group of Independence Township women met to formally
organize a new DAR chapter. Mrs. James B. Green, Organizing Regent,
had worked diligently to bring this about.
This chapter was named for an historical area of land in the
southeast portion of Independence Township. In the early 1800's,
this land was so highly regarded by the Indian Chief Sashabaw that
he bestowed his name upon it and the small stream meandering through
it. Sashabaw's tribe used the area for its abundant hunting and
fishing and shared its wealth with the early settlers.
The settlers retained the name Sashabaw in its purity out of their
esteem for the friendly and protective chief. The name is still
prevalent in the township and some descendants of the early settlers
have been and are DAR members.
